References on Surtsey

There has always been great interest in Surtsey, and numerous articles have been written about it. In the field of geological sciences, a total of 288 papers and books have been written in 11 different languages on the Surtsey eruption and Surtsey in the period 1963-1990. The number of articles on the biology of the island is most likely similar.

The following is a list of some writings on Surtsey in various fields of the natural sciences. The Surtsey Nature Reserve has been inscribed to the World Heritage List of UNESCO. The Icelandic Institute of Natural History has compiled a nomination document with the assistance and advice of many people and institutions that gives a very comprehensive overview about the research conducted on Surtsey until that time (see below). A bibliography of close to 500 scientific publications relevant to Surtsey (1963–2006) was also compiled by the Icelandic Institute of Natural History for the same occasion (see below).
